Michel Auriou -  Manager - Auriou Toolworks

michel-auriou.jpgI'm Michel Auriou, a 4th generation rasp and tool maker.

The origins of my business date back over 150 years (to 1856) in Paris.

Way back then, the  owner of the forge, Mr Duneau, made tools for artists (Maillol, Rodin, Camille Claudel, Belmondo…). At the time he was sending riffler blanks to Saint-Juéry to be hand "stitched" by Paulin Caussé, my grandfather's brother in law. Mr Duneau made a proposition to Paulin Caussé to come to Paris which he did and he subsequently bought the business from the childless Mr Duneau in 1921.

The Auriou's got involved when my grandfather, Louis Auriou went to Paris to help Paulin.

Louis came back to Saint-Juéry in 1933 and worked alone until 1960 when he and my father Bernard bought the company from Paulin Caussé. The forge and building where we now work in Saint Juery was built in 1967 and extended in 1975.

We are still the only toolmakers that use the same forging techniques that earned Auriou a deserved reputation for quality. This reputation for fine tools is appreciated by artists and craftspeople throughout the world.

We are a small team and this team changes as people retire, move on to followdifferent interests or to be blunt they don't quite cut the mustard.

These 4 people have been at the forge the longest since we re-started 8 or so years ago.

Denis - Stitcher

Denis is one of our stitchers he has worked in the Auriou factory since 1976.

Stitching is the process of creating each tooth on a rasp or riffler by hand. This must be done consistently along the length of the rasp, and also on the sides if required. He is another one that started work in the factory before me. Dennis  has been stitching since 2001. Denis is teaching Benoit how to stitch.

He likes his rugby but France nearly always lose to England.

Jean-Luc - Stitcher

Always happy, always smiling, always stitching.

He's not shy, Jean-Luc is just busy stitching the best rasps in the world!

Benoit - almost a stitcher

Actually Benoit helps with pretty much everything and as a former apprentice stonemason he knows a lot about stone and stone tools.

Benoit stitches the edges of some of our rasps, is our sandblasting guy and general all round good egg.

He is also left handed which gives him a significant advantage for stitching left handed rasps.

Sandrine

Sandrine helps us with office administration and accounts.

She is our only lady and we all look after her very well.

She has a wicked laugh and keeps the boys laughing.

We also have a couple of blacksmiths plus an all rounder who helps with heat treatment, grinding, polishing, handling and so forth. The demand for our tools is very high and we do our best to make these tools as quickly as possible. We are poor communicators to the outside world as we are used to working in our own way.  Sorry about that!

SO YOU SEE WE ARE A SMALL TEAM
