Cabinet makers rasps are used for general shaping work. They are relatively wide in proportion to their length - this gives you considerable cutting power and you will achieve a surprisingly smooth finish to your work. The teeth on Auriou rasps are handed so as to take account of the natural position of your hands when pushing the rasp (just like a plane which you often slightly skew when pushing along a board). So yes we make for left and right handers. When you get your rasp you will soon discover the correct angle (about 30 degrees) to get the maximum efficiency from the teeth on the rasp (you can "hear" the correct angle)
As a general guide you should chose a rasp which is 3 to 4 times longer then the width of the piece you are shaping.
As an example - For shaping guitar necks you should chose need either the 12" or 10" rasp before moving on to a smaller, finer rasp for more refined shaping.
Auriou rasps do not tear your edges so you can work to a line with the utmost confidence.
The coarsest grain for the cabinet rasp is the 12" grain 4 and this will remove a lot of material very efficiently. (1 is the coarsest grain - 15 is finest grain).
If you are buying your first rasp for general work then we would suggest 9" grain 10 cabinet rasp. If you need help deciding then please e-mail us for advice. We are here to help.
These are precision shaping tools so look carefully at the range and decide what best suits your needs.
Aggressive shaping = coarser longer rasps
Shaping - mid to fine grain 7 - 11
Refine your shape - the finer grains (cut) 11-15
SPECIAL NOTE - NICHOLSON 49/50
We often get asked which Auriou is equivalent to the Nicholson 49 & 50 rasps.
The closest answer is
Nicholson 49 ---------- Auriou 10" Cabinet Grain 7
Nicholson 50 ---------- Auriou 10" Cabinet Grain 9

Just like every other Auriou rasp that I have purchased, the 12 inch 6 grain cabinet maker's rasp is everything I expected it to be and more. These tools cut some of the hardest woods with very little effort and are an asset for every serious woodworker's tool chest.

The grain on this 200mm (8") Cabinet Makers is finer (11), and than any of my 6 Vallorbes (cuts 1,2,4), so that is a factor, but the cut leaves an impressively smooth/consistently textured surface. Cutting Jarrah has a feel a bit like grating a dense cheese, it feels like the surface is being peeled away in small strips, rather than chipped away with a bunch of tiny chisels. Quite different. Perhaps it is the oil in the timber. The feel in Mahogany is different, drier, but shapes really well.
The handle is just a tad small for me maybe - but I'll get used to it. Look forward to ordering some slightly coarser - which were out of stock when I ordered.

I was told that these Auriou rasps were one of the best and despite the expense I was not disappointed.
I've used this file a few times so far and its performance is outstanding. It removes wood fast and the finish is excellent. It is perhaps a serious investment for a hobby woodworker (I am) but I suppose you pay for the craftmanship and skill in its production (it is hand stitched after all). You can not compare this high end tool with the cheap mass produced (machine stitched) rasps, it's a totally different feel and the results are leagues ahead of the budget rasps.
